So what's the difference between Grass fed and Grain fed animal products, and how can you differentiate the two in terms of nutritional and health benefits?

There are many differences between meat and animal products produced from animals fed a grass diet as opposed to a grain diet. The greatest difference is in the ratio of Omega fatty acids; the polyunsaturated fatty acids composition of all cell membranes is to a great extent dependent on dietary intake. Two of the essential fatty acids are; Omega-6 and Omega-3. Not only are these fatty acids important to overall human health they are necessary in the right proportions. Outside of the recommended proportions they can cause health problems, often particularly serious ones. The recommended ratio of omega-6 fatty acids to omega-3 fatty acids should be less than 4:1. Grain-fed meat can sometimes have ratios (beef is the worst!!) that exceed 20:1 ratio, whereas grass-fed generally has a ratio of around 3:1.

In layman's terms, grass-fed animal products have shown to be rich in all the fats now proven to be health-enhancing, but low in the fats that have been linked to ill-health and disease. From my own personal experience I can say one of the best "supplements" I have added to my diet is grass fed meat, I have seen immediate changes in my overall health and performance since switching to pasture meats.

As most of you would be aware the 2011 Reebok CrossFit Games were held over the weekend in Carson, California and the fittest have been crowned, Rich Froning Jnr and Annie Thorisdottir. The games were awesome to watch,  tonnes of variety in the events this year, really abided by CrossFit's mantra of being prepared for the unknown.. ocean swim, sand runs, monkey bars, handstand walking, spin bikes, prowler pushes and even softball throws. Many questioned the inclusion of a softball throw but it just goes to show we should listen to Glassman when he says, "regularly learn and play new sports." You may have also noticed the inclusion of sled drags, prowler pushes and farmers carry, has CrossFit HQ been reading our training logs??

New England CrossFit took out the teams event, but actually only one won event - the one which counted! Just a reminder that you don't need to excel in any one area of CrossFit but just be consistent across all domains! The final teams event was a showcase of the benchmarks; Elizabeth, Fran, Isabel, Grace, Diane, and Karen - great to watch!

The games were truly inspirational, and I know a lot of you will be motivated to start training for 2012. See you at the Box.

We've had the Open, and the Regionals, and now finally this weekend the 2011 Reebok CrossFit Games will be held at the Home Depot Centre in Carson, California. The biggest event on the CrossFit calendar, the games are the premier test to find the fittest individuals on the planet. This has been four months in the making and is sure to be massive!!  You can watch the Games for free on the games site, there will be live streaming and a three hour show at the end of each day.

Who will win??

The worst part of our diet comes from grains and more specifically a protein in them called gluten.

The following is from CrossFit Vancouver:

The tallest people on earth in the late 19th century were plains indians (5 ‘ 11? average ht) who lived on a hunter gatherer diet. By contrast the average height of a US calvary man was 5’4?. Also Hunter Gathers showed no sign of Cv disease, type II diabetes, various cancers, Alzheimer’s and a host of other gnarly diseases that are killing us in record numbers.

The difference……grains.

Why? Think of the goal of every living thing on earth...

It’s goal is to procreate. Now also recognise that every living thing has some sort of mechanism to defend itself from being killed so it can pass on its genes. Clams have shells, roses thorns, snakes have venom. Grains have gluten and its purpose is to beak down your gut and kill you. If you realise that wheat flour is in thousands of foods, then you will begin to realise that if you have any kind of sensitivity to gluten (which you may not even know about), then you're being attacked almost every time you eat!!

Stop eating gluten for 30 days and see what happens...
