So if you've taken up this month's 30 Day Paleo Challenge chances are you're still in the "honeymoon phase" feeling motivated and going strong. However, what happens mid-month and how can you maintain the Paleo diet beyond October?
Just in Case - Amy Kubai
Right now, picture the inside of your cabinets, refrigerator, freezer and/or pantry. I’m sure you’ve got the prerequisite paleo choices on hand (meats, vegetables, healthy fats, fruit), and those are the things you’re thinking of right now. Am I right? Now, I want you to look a little deeper, behind the cans of coconut milk, emergency tuna stash, and jerky bag – you know, the place where you’re keeping that carton of oatmeal, box of crackers, and jar of peanut butter - “just in case”. Sound familiar?
When making the transition to a paleo style of eating many of us keep some ‘staples’ from our former eating routines on hand “just in case”. Unfortunately, “just in case” often turns into “moment of weakness” and results in you, a spoon, the couch, and a container of ice cream. And while a treat is perfectly acceptable in most cases, it seems that when these foods are in the house, “just in case” happens more often than not. Think about the last time you’ve had an emergency and NEEDED a bag of flour, a box of crackers, or a candy bar… Coming up empty? What about that time you put out a fire with that can of Coke or used that 10 pound bag of sugar as a doorstop – um, yeah – that’s what I thought…
If the foods you’re keeping around “just in case” are making everyday appearances in the diets of you and your family, then maybe it’s time to clean it out and get rid of the “just in case”. Those foods will ALWAYS be available at the grocery store “just in case” you ever do truly need them (doubtful). But don’t let them sabotage you. If you want some ice cream once and a while go out and have some, don’t bring it back to your house. The same is true with all treats – eat them when you’re out and reserve your home as a safe haven. Many of you are probably thinking, “What about the kids?” Think about it.
Do the kids really need fruit snacks, pretzels, and Lucky Charms?
Take the challenge – clean out the junk. If you do, you’ll never have to worry about “just in case” becoming “just because it was there.” What’s hiding behind your jerky?
